]]>The post Garmin Instinct Vs Garmin fenix 5 appeared first on Highly Tuned Athletes.
]]>But, the Garmin Instinct is going to change this!
The Garmin Instinct allows for a similar smartwatch experience at an entry-level price. Starting from $399 the Garmin Instinct is significantly cheaper than the Garmin fenix 5, especially the fenix 5 Plus variants. Obviously, with the price difference there is going to be some features that won’t be available. We’ll get into that later.
Durability:
Due to its rugged and tough design, the Garmin Instinct is perfect for those working in harsh and demanding conditions. Carpenters, plumbers, electricians, builders and emergency workers will certainly approve of the thermal, shock and water resistant construction.
Appearance:
As we’ve all seen over the last five years, watches and smart watches have become larger, not necessarily because of engineering though also aesthetics. Brands like Nixon, Casio and Suunto have been using bulky, bold and large designs to appeal to men. This is the segment Garmin is addressing with the Garmin Instinct.
In contrast with the Garmin fenix 5, the Garmin Instinct is much bulkier in appearance, though physically the dimensions are roughly the same.
The Screen:
Okay, so the screen on the Garmin Instinct is very different to modern smartwatches. In fact, the watch has two screens. The screen size according to Garmin is 0.9” or 2 mm. Further, the screen within the Garmin Instinct is monochrome, meaning it only displays in black and/or white. The fenix 5 has a bigger and better colour screen, and double the pixel count.
Let’s be honest though, the screen doesn’t make or break the watch (no pun intended). In general Garmin displays are extremely durable and perform amazingly in tough conditions. Both watches don’t drain the battery and are sunlight readable.
Software features:
If you’re a super athlete wanting to check all the available metrics you can measure, the Garmin Instinct is probably not the watch for you. However if you’re a tradie or emergency services worker, the Garmin Instinct may be the watch you’ve long been waiting for. As with the price difference with the two watches, some features have not trickled through to its cheaper outdoor brother.
The Garmin Instinct will start from $399 with expected high demand. If you would like to get your hands on one ASAP, please place an order now!

]]>The software from Polar includes all the necessary programs and activity modes to get you going. With over 130 activities on offer there is a sport mode for pretty much everyone. If you can’t find what you’re after you can add up to 20 custom sport profiles. Also included with the Polar Vantage V is running power metrics. Running power allows you to measure how much energy your muscles are using. This can be useful to help discover if your weeks of training are paying off. And this metric doesn’t require any external sensors, it’s all packed into the Polar Vantage V.
Compared to other GPS running watches on the market, the Polar Vantage series offers great battery life considering its size. The Polar vantage M provides up to 30 hours battery life in GPS mode, while the Polar vantage V delivers up to 40 hours of battery life in GPS mode. These test are performed with the GPS set to one second intervals, the most accurate setting.
Another new addition to the Polar Vantage series is the screen. Both Vantage M and Vantage V feature colour displays with 240 x 240 pixel resolution. The screens in the Polar Vantage are sharp and display colours beautifully. It is one of the best displays found in a GPS running watch.
One of the biggest new additions with the Polar Vantage is the amount of sensors used with the optical heart rate. A total of 9 LED sensors are used. There are different LEDs used to measure different layers of the skin. With more sensors, the optical heart rate is more accurate and reliable. The Polar Vantage also features magnetic skin contact sensors.
The Polar Vantage Series will start from $399 with expected high demand. If you would like to get your hands on one ASAP, please place an order now!

]]>Music on the Forerunner 645 Music can be downloaded over Wifi or using a media manager with a standard dragging and dropping process via a computer. The ability to have music automatically download via WIFI is truly great as we live in a world where music isn’t bought but streamed. Adding new music and playlists will be no problem with this device as long as you have access to iHeart Radio & Deezer. Then you can pair a set of Bluetooth headphones whilst you run and listen with no phone. It is expected other streaming services will follow in the coming months.
Another addition to the Garmin Forerunner 645 is Garmin Pay. This is one of our favourite features from Garmin, as it allows for tap and go payments with ease. Garmin pay doesn’t require a phone, so if you go out for a run and want to buy a drink or some small items you can. Local banks supporting Garmin pay include ANZ, NAB and Commonwealth Bank, with Westpac, suspected to be next-in-line.
If you’re thinking the Garmin Forerunner 645 Music looks familiar, it’s because it’s utilising the body of the vivoactive 3. This is a good thing, as the Garmin vivoactive 3 is not only light, compact but also slim. This results in a perfect running watch as there will be no problems with respect to it’s sizing. The only differences with its physical design are the buttons and no touchscreen.
The Garmin Forerunner 645 Music has all the features all come to know and expect.
– Built-in music
– Garmin Pay
– Running dynamic
– Training status
– Garmin connect
– 24/7 monitoring
– GPS + GLONASS
– Built-in Sports
– Custom workouts
The Garmin Forerunner 645 Music will start from $599 with expected high demand due to its music features. If you would like to get your hands on one ASAP, please place an order now!

]]>The post Garmin vivoactive 3 Review appeared first on Highly Tuned Athletes.
]]>First of all, this is one of the smallest Garmin GPS watches on the market. To illustrate the progress from Garmin is a picture below of a Garmin fenix 3 and a Garmin vivoactive 3 side by side.
What we really like with the Garmin vivoactive 3 is the touchscreen. Over the years we’ve seen touchscreens come and go with GPS watches. The reason being is that they were really clunky and just counter-intuitive due to slow response times from the devices. The screen used in the Garmin vivoactive 3 is the complete opposite. It’s just like using your smartphone, it’s very intuitive.
Another new feature we like from Garmin is the sideswipe bar, which allows for easy navigation. However, we had a few troubles with its sensitivity. We expect further updates to allow for greater customisation however, it takes a little while to get used to. We found we were using the touchscreen far more, though we think it will be handy whilst running.
Garmin Pay is here and three of the major banks are currently supporting it. It takes roughly five minutes to set up, as the Banks need to verify the card is yours.
Whilst setting it up a card with ANZ (as we tested), ANZ sent through a text message to the corresponding phone whom that card is attached to with a verification code. Every bank is different and these steps could change.
With Garmin Pay, it is very easy to use. All you need to do is enter the desired pin (on the watch) and tap away. You don’t need to psychically touch the card reader just be a couple of centimeters within range. The perfect thing with Garmin pay is that it is secure due to a pin requirement and that no phone is required. You can leave the house without your phone and make payments on the go.
For its fitness features, there are some new apps and updates to the majority of the familiar activities. Most noted updates are with gym workouts. Updated apps include strength training (now records sets and reps) and now there is an app for yoga. The vivoactive 3 also includes the ability for you to load custom training plans and custom workouts.
The elephant in the room?
How does it compare to a fenix 5. It’s different, but the same. Essentially, the vivoactive has all the features of the fenix 5 (with some exclusions) but is packaged differently. For starters it is lighter, smaller, features a touchscreen and side swipe bar. These differences change the way you interact with the watch and overall your experience.
If it was our money, we would be leaning towards the vivoactive 3. Rarely do you need or assess “advance running metrics”. Further, it has all the outdoor apps that the fenix 5 has, which we were surprised about. And lastly, it has another one up on the fenix 5, Garmin Pay which is already supported by CBA, NAB, ANZ and more to come.
If you’re after a top of the line smartwatch, with all the fitness features apps and fitness tracking, with an amazing price, the vivoactive 3 is simply for you!

]]>The post Garmin vivomove HR Review appeared first on Highly Tuned Athletes.
]]>The vivomove HR has some nifty tricks. First and foremost is the screen. It’s completely hidden and also doubles up as a touchscreen. It’s unusual at first to be interacting with what seems to be an analogue watch, but it’s truly natural. All you need to do to activate the screen, is to double tap on it at the bottom of the watch face (which is where the screen is located). From here you can swipe right and left to see relevant data such as steps, stress level, H.R, calories burnt and more.
Pictured above is the screen in an office environment. Here you can see the watch hands being moved to 10 & 2 to accommodate the information displayed on the screen.
With this innovative touch screen, you can control your phone from your wrist. The vivomove HR will allow you to answer phone calls, clear notifications and music.
The most impressive feature in this package is the wrist-based H.R. To fit all of the other functionality such as the screen, Bluetooth sensors, accelerometers and of course the actual watch is impressive.
Pictured above is the optical H.R profile from the vivomove HR Rose Gold. If you haven’t noticed it is super slim.
What the Garmin vivomove HR is perfect for, is for those who don’t want anything too complicated from a smartwatch or fitness tracker. It fits in as a normal watch and doesn’t take on the look of other fitness trackers often referred to as a prison bracelet. With its 24/7 tracking for pretty much everything (sleep, stress, H.R, calories, V02 max and intensity minutes) it’s a complete package as a very presentable fitness tracker. Hence the reason why we have been sold out of our stock for close to a month.
This is one of our favourite products for 2017 and we anticipate it will be in high demand in the new year.
The vivomove HR starts from $299 with an expected arrival of new stock between late December to mid-January.
If you would like to get your hands on the Garmin vivomove HR, the quickest way is to order through our website.

Some of the other improvements include:
Now the other new addition to Polar’s line up is the Polar A370. Although it hasn’t received a dramatic facelift, the software has improved. The highlight of the A370 is the Sleep Plus tracking software. Another notable update is the ability to gain a GPS signal via a mobile phone. ]]>If you’re unaware of what a PLB does, it is used to send a distress signal to emergency authorities.
Whilst you shouldn’t be using this device every time you venture out, this device has a 10 year battery replacement interval. Rest assured you can always test the device, before you go out. This amazing battery life is achieved through extensive research and development by the team at KTI.
To achieve this the KTI PLB uses two batteries utilising lithium technology. Using two batteries allows for a backup system, so if one fails for any reason there is another battery to power the device.
Once the device has activated an emergency signal, the GPS will be active between 24-48 hours. The signal is updated as well, with the KTI PLB it is updated every 5 minutes, whereas some devices won’t update position at all. This is exceptionally important for those out near the water or in it.
Another neat feature of the KTI PLB is the antenna. The whip antenna has 360 degree swivel to boost the signal for detection. This is also important as the antenna facing towards the sky and the satellite increasing the accuracy of the signal.
Other features include 66 channel GPS receiver, fast GPS acquisition, strobe light, lightweight, global coverage, water resistance with buoyancy and 3 metre accuracy.

]]>The Garmin fenix 5 has now new software that is welcomed by many users. With basic improvements to the user interface and new metrics to indicate performance trends, the fenix 5 adds another level of usability and fitness tracking.
Build
Although the looks haven’t changed dramatically from the fenix 3, the fenix 5 still retains the same legendary build we’ve all come to love. If you’re coming from Fitness Bands then you’ll be exceptionally happy with the ruggedness of the fenix 5.
Another new feature that we absolutely love is Garmin’s new QuickFit system accessory bands. With the fenix 5 being an all round watch, not just for training, you can switch your look from sport to formal with two simple clicks.
With the addition of the fenix 5S to the range, it’s awesome to still have optical HR in such a small package. With a slimmer profile and improved software to increase accuracy and reduce battery drain, the optical HR can track your movements 24/7.
If you’re an avid explorer then mapping on the Garmin fenix 5X will be one your favorite features of the new range. With mapping assisting with trail runs, hiking, running, cycling, city exploring and navigation, you’ll be able to plan the best routes and never get lost.
One of my favourite features of the fenix line is the functionality included to help you through your day. With smart notifications and control of your phone, you can answer phone calls without having to run to your phone.
Other all day usability features include, general activity tracking to make sure your healthy away from the gym and training. With a step counter, calorie counter, sleep counter these tracking abilities provide a bigger picture for your health.

]]>The post Garmin VIRB 360 Initial Impressions appeared first on Highly Tuned Athletes.
]]>Firstly, the 5.7k recordable resolution is new and exciting. The biggest feat of this camera is that it records both front and rear, which is how it achieves 360 degree video. Other cameras, for example like the 360 fly use only lens, which distorts the image and worsens image quality. The Garmin VIRB 360 records 4k 360 degrees properly.
During the recording or post editing the VIRB 360 editing software is extremely useful. With the recording of both front and rear cameras, the software can undergo a process called stitching. This can be achieved through VIRB edit mobile app or desktop app. Even better though, the stitching process can be done on the fly via the camera. However, the 5.7k recording can’t be stitched on the fly or via the VIRB edit software as it requires significant amounts of processing power.
Data overlays, are an amazing addition to any sports video. With the Garmin VIRB software it’s now easier than ever to add cool data to lift the engagement of the video. Neat overlays include speed, distance covered, altitude and even more when you connect to external sensors. The VIRB 360 can connect to heart rate sensors, cycling sensors and automotive sensors.
Other specs include raw capture, water-resistant to 10 metres, GPS, Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, Accelerometer, 1 hour battery life, 360 audio, timelapse mode and more.

]]>The post DJI Spark Initial Impressions appeared first on Highly Tuned Athletes.
]]>A drone that we actually want and will use. The DJI Spark has got us very excited within our offices, as parts of the team have been early adopters with the technology.
The biggest failing of previous drones has been price and usability. Now the DJI Spark starts from $859 and can be flow without a remote and weighs a mere 300 grams. And it gets better, the Spark has advanced avoidance technology to make sure your drone comes home in one piece.
Our favourite feature of DJI Spark is the self flying. Here are some amazing features:
Quick Launch: With FaceAware, Spark lifts off from your hand by recognising your face. It then takes off and hovers in place within seconds of powering on.
TapFly: Tap your phone screen and the Spark will fly to the location of exactly where you tapped.
ActiveTrack (our favourite): As per the name, ActiveTrack tracks you. It’s simply enabled by tapping the screen and by gesture (just wave)
For the camera, it outputs some seriously awesome video quality. Although it doesn’t do 4k recording it makes up for it with amazing 1080p videos. The lens has an aperture of f/2.6 and is a 25 mm wide equivalent.
The sensor is also of a high quality and is larger in comparison to the sensor found in the iPhone 7 Plus. This is exceptionally important considering its size. The bigger the sensor the more detail you will capture.
With all these amazing features including size, weight, auto flying, and image quality, we’re declaring this the hottest piece of tech for 2017. We are very excited to see what this beauty will capture all over the world, along with our customers!!!

]]>However, the other main difference is the weight. If you exercise frequently, you will appreciate the lighter feel of the Forerunner 935. The FR935 weighs only 49 grams, which is incredibly light considering the features it encompasses.
The Forerunner 935 is also thinner than the fenix 5 (13.9 mm thick compared to 15.5 mm) and fenix 5S for that matter (14.5 mm thick). The FR935 also retains the barometric altimeter from the fenix 5, as well as Wi-Fi which was reserved for the Sapphire versions of fenix 5. The only downgrade was water resistance (from 100 metres on the fenix 5 to 50 metres on the FR935), which isn’t a factor for most triathletes. With Garmin quoting the same battery life as the fenix 5, the FR935 is a steal at the lower price.
Software is also improved in the Forerunner 935. The Training Status tool analyses previous workouts and general fitness levels to display whether you’re training productively, peaking or overdoing it. Another improvement is Training Load, which grabs data from a longer period to analyse a week’s worth of workouts. This helps to determine if each individual session is too easy or too hard.
The Forerunner 935 can also be paired with Garmin’s yet to be released Running Dynamics Pod (which clips to your waistband) to track and display metrics like cadence, ground contact time, vertical oscillation and stride length. This means that you don’t have to wear a HRM-Run chest strap if you’re happy measuring your heart rate from your wrist.
With a simpler design, the Forerunner 935 has all the best features of the fenix 5 and Forerunner 735XT. Like the Ford Model T, you can have any colour as long as it is Black. Unlike the Ford Model T, you can customise the FR935 with Garmin’s range of QuickFit 22 bands. If you’re a triathlete looking for maximum training data with minimal weight, this is the watch for you.

]]>The post Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist HR Review appeared first on Highly Tuned Athletes.
]]>Okay, what’s the big deal with Suunto adding wrist-based HR? Simply, it’s the best wrist-based HR we’ve seen on the market to date.
The biggest drawback with wrist-based HR is that the device technically doesn’t measure heart rate; it measures pulse. The biggest impact of this form of measurement is a delay between your actual heart rate and the numbers displayed on the watch, to the extreme that you might still see your resting heart rate after a set of lifting weights or a quick sprint during interval training.
For the Spartan Sport Wrist HR, Suunto teamed up with Valencell utilising all their years of experience. The HR sensor uses two green LED’s and one yellow LED, improving accuracy across a broader range of skin tones.
Overall with the Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist HR, you will see a delay of up to five second and a difference of 2 BPM. This is considerably better than any other wrist-based HR sensor and as close as you can get to the accuracy of a traditional HRM chest strap.
Also announced and now released for the Suunto Spartan range is a heap of software improvements. Improvements include GPS tracking accuracy, ability to customise activities on the watch, ability to create custom interval training on the watch, the addition of altitude and barometric pressure trends (Spartan Ultra), POIs in navigation, and the ability to view 30-day activity summaries.

Enhanced information will be displayed to monitor training status and training effect. These readouts show aerobic and anaerobic benefits of your workout. Another significant improvement is the V02 max estimator. Garmin uses data from your running speed, heart rate BPM and heart rate variability to measure V02 max.
If you’re not sure what VO2 max is, it’s an important measure to help determine endurance capacity during prolonged, submaximal exercise (85 percent of max heart rate capacity). As a result of increased measuring, users will be able to determine their fitness levels during prolonged exercise.
Other general improvements and updates to the fenix Chronos include an improved HR experience, new watch faces, improved backlight for menus, stability, support for GroupTrack, and much more.

The differences are huge, and this sets the priorities apart as the screen in the Apple Watch is a significant battery drain. However, the screen in the Apple Watch allows information to be displayed crisper and sharper including videos & photos, maps, text messages, notifications, apps and more.
The other difference between the displays is the interaction you have. The Apple Watch is touch and Garmin simply isn’t. The fenix 5 has buttons to utilise its software which for activities like running, is far superior than a touchscreen.
Winner – Apple Watch
Battery:
One of the best features with the garmin fenix 5 is the battery life. With the digitalisation of the world and everything needing re-charging frequently, it’s refreshing to have a battery in a device lasting longer than a week.
Battery life is one the biggest downsides with not only the Apple Watch, but smartwatches in general. The reason for this is the battery drain of the superior display and faster processor. With better processing power, smartwatches like the Apple Watch can operate powerful apps.
The Apple Watch is rated for 18 hours of use which requires a daily charge.
Winner – Garmin fenix 5
Apps:
If you’re into apps, the Apple Watch is the clear winner. However, depending on the use case Garmin’s native apps are the best in the market. With applications for pretty much any sport and the ability to create your own apps (with data fields), if you’re an outdoor adventurer or fitness freak you will most likely prefer the Garmin fenix 5 software.
Winner – Apple Watch
Fitness:
The Apple Watch is targeted to a wider audience and its fitness tracking and applications are built to deliver for mainstream fitness uses. One of the standout features of the Apple Watch is the fitness rings (which I’m a fan of). The benefit of this activity tracking is the tracking takes into account everything rather than just steps; tying calories, exercise and time standing together. So if you burn most of your calories on a bike or lifting weights, your activity tracking will reflect your active lifestyle (even if you’re not recording lots of steps on a regular basis).
Where the Garmin stands out is for the hardcore user or outdoors person. Its exercise apps are the best in the industry and offer a level of customisation and data not found on any other fitness watch.
Winner – tie
Build Quality:
Although the Apple Watch has a 50 metre water resistance, it is built as a smartwatch and its priorities of design are different. For instance, you can take the Apple Watch running and swimming but you might not want to take it skiing or snowboarding for fear of damage. The fenix 5 however is far more rigid, especially if you opt for the Sapphire glass display.
Winner – Garmin fenix 5
Optical HR:
From all accounts, we believe the fenix 5 to have a superior wrist based heart rate than the Apple Watch. However, the fenix 5 isn’t perfect and if you’re after the best wrist based heart rate you should consider the Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist HR.
Winner – Garmin fenix 5
Pricing:
Pricing for the Apple Watch Series 2 starts from: $529
Pricing for the Garmin fenix 5 starts from: $799
Winner – Apple Watch
Conclusion:
Both watches are the best in the areas they focus on. Both have different designs and approaches to common uses. If you’re into your fitness and want to take it to the next level or a fitness freak the Garmin will suit you more. However, if you’re just into fitness generally and keep a keen eye on your activity the Apple Watch might be the better choice.

]]>A significant addition to Beats is the W1 chip, which allows for easy pairing and switching between Apple devices. All you need to do is turn the headphones on and press connect once promoted. As it is paired users can check battery life with a custom icon displaying BeatsX.
If you haven’t heard yet, Apple AirPods have been released on the market and are one the newest innovation from Apple. However, if you’re after better sound, better fit and earphones to use whilst working out, Airpods might not be the best option.
With BeatsX, the form and sound are completely different to other earphones. BeatsX prioritises not only it’s design aesthetics but materials.
One example of this is the soft touch material developed to feel comfortable and repel moisture.
Other design features included a flex cable for all day wear and magnetic ear tips. The magnetic tip isn’t just for looks, it allows for the earphones to be secure and keep them tangle free.
For the sound, BeatsX isn’t heavily emphasising low and mid tones, though bass is definitely pronounced (signature sound from Beats).
With battery life, BeatsX is more than enough for any days use. Rated for 8 hours use, BeatsX has a Fast Fuel feature providing 2 hours of playback with 5 minutes of charge. So you’re in any trouble, 5 minutes charge offers a significant boost in battery life.
As an overall package BeatsX provide a versatile solution for those who are active daily and want a clean sound signature from their headphones. For workouts, it’s perfect for running, cycling and other similar workouts. Other features including the W1 chip, magnetic tips, soft touch materials and overall design, make BeatsX a compelling all in one active earphone package.

]]>If you swim or dive, over time a seal from a watch can deteriorate due to wear. Additionally, when changing a battery it is important to seal the watch to maintain its resistance rating. Therefore, if you subject a watch to such conditions where water is exposed it’s imperative to test your watch. This will ensure you project your watch from water damage.
At our main location in Hampton, we’ve invested significant resources with an in-house repair facility with equipment worth over 10,000 dollars. This equipment offers cutting edge results in a dry environment, supplying full data logging and graphical analysis.
Our state of the art system can test a 100-metre water resistance rating. Along with watches, our team and facilities can test heart rate straps, to allow your equipment to be in a working state.

]]>Before you get your hands on the most anticipated piece of fitness tech for 2017, we have a summary of the software improvements provided in the next generation watch.
Firstly, the user interface is improved due to the hardware update of the screen. Garmin is fully utilising the 64 colour screen with 240 x 240 pixels (previously 16 colours & 218 x 218 pixels). Alongside the improved User Interface is the quick access controls. This a new design for a simpler look and feel. Even emojis are now supported
UltraTrac is an ultra amazing software improvement. UltraTrac enables up to 75 hours GPS on time with plans to increase the range to 100 hours. This feature sets the fenix 5 to be one the fiercest watches for those requiring such a demand.
Additional training data can be accessed in the new software which includes training status and training loads. This data is acquired by analysing previous trends indicating whether workouts are paying off.
Lastly and the most significant software improvement for the Garmin fenix 5x is maps. A long awaited feature that has been other smartwatches and even the Garmin Epix.
Maps on the fenix 5x allows for a full navigation experience just like a normal GPS unit. With turn by turn navigation (including street names), POI of interest, elevation data and much more, this is perfect for any avid traveller, city worker or city resident.

]]>The Garmin fenix 5 now comes in three sizes. However, the most significant hardware update is the slimmer H.R profile compared to its predecessor. The optical H.R profile is close to being a smooth surface, though it has a protruding element measured at .3mm. This will undoubtedly make the watch far more comfortable.
The new screen is a welcome addition. With a larger display sized at 240 x 240 pixels on the fenix 5 and fenix 5X alongside 64 colours, compared to 16 colours previously.
Another significant update is the new gyroscope sensor enabling for 75 hours GPS on time with a target of 100 hours through Garmin’s UltraTrac mode.
Although not a new sensor Garmin has added the ability for a many ANT + and bluetooth sensors to be connected. Examples of this included:
One of the best and long-awaited hardware updates, is the quick and seamless way to change the look and feel of the watch. The Garmin QuickFit system allows a change to occur in seconds.

]]>The fenix 5 now comes with three different variants, the fenix 5S/ 5/5X. The differences are minor with size being the biggest differentiator. As a result sizes are suited for different preferences and other feature sets. The big differences with the new range are battery life and mapping abilities, especially significant for hiking or riding. All round improvements include slimmer optical H.R profile, improved screen and quickfit band release kit.
The new design is aimed at catering towards the growing demand for fitness GPS watches across many different buyers. The traditional fenix 3 is of a significant size on many wrists and is believed to hinder its appeal to younger and female buyers. Now with the fenix 5S it is 10mm smaller in width and significantly lighter. These design changes will appeal to many new buyers, especially if long battery life isn’t a necessary feature.
Battery life remains the same in contrast to the fenix 3. The fenix 5 and 5x with GPS on, can achieve a respectable 24 hours compared to its smaller cousin with 13 hours. If you demand more than battery life the ultratrac mode is available to more than double battery life. With the addition of a gyroscope in the new range, ultratrac allows for up to 75 hours battery life with later software improvements to aim towards 100 hours.
Although the range of new watches have similar feature sets the main difference between fenix 5 and 5x are the “advanced features”. These features are pre-loaded with maps, turn by turn assistance, Points of interest, waypoints, map objects and elevation information.
Advanced Features Summary:
Road Trip Ride/Round Trip Run
– This allows runners and cyclists to enter a distance they would like to travel and have the watch suggest appropriate courses
Glanceable, Easy to read Guidance
– Provides banners that show upcoming turn cues
Around Me
-New map mode that will provide POI, waypoints and other map object within the display ring for a user defined range
Data Overlays on Map Screen
Future Plot
Quickfit is another new addition to the fenix 5 range which will allows changing the look of the fenix quickly with easy bands. Bands are available in leather, silicone or metal options. If you purchase a sapphire model, a spare silicone band is supplied.
To summarise the fenix 5 keeps all of it’s best features and caters to a wider range of buyers. With it’s lighter and smaller design with the fenix 5S and improved functionality with fenix 5X, these watches will mark the beginning of the next generation of smart fitness watches.
To purchase or inquire about a fenix 5 give us a call or send us an email. Pre-orders are now been taken with an expected release date to communicated soon.

We first start off with the Polar M200, one the most anticipated running watches of 2016. With its groundbreaking price of $199, this no-frills watch provides the ultimate running metrics at a fraction of the price. With features such as built-in optical Heart Rate, GPS, training software, smartphone notifications and 24/7 tracking is rivalling the best in the market.
Suunto Spartan Sport
If you know or are a Suunto fan, then the Suunto Spartan Sport is a must have. With a whole design, the spartan sport is now a completely new experience compared to its predecessors. The biggest change is the colour screen, which it’s high detail and touch screen. Within our offices, we believe the Suunto has the better screen over the Garmin fenix 3.
Other improvements include improved battery life, a major software update and cosmetic design. The newest software improvements allow for up to 80 different activities, so tracking your activities should be no hassle.
Evolve skateboards
If you know someone who is different, then it’s probably an idea to get them something equal to their personality. The evolve skateboards GT series is just that. The GT electric skateboards create a new rush with the ultimate portability and practicality. With its amazing range of up to 50 kilometres and top speed of 42 kilometres per hour.
Edge 820
The edge 820 is the update the cycling fanatics have been waiting for. It’s updated feature set along with hardware has provided necessary and useful benefits for the users. One of the best new features is the Maps, which also feature navigation. Other features include a touch screen, improved software, group track (to see who is shouting out coffee next) varia connectivity and emergency alert.
TomTom Touch
Lastly, the TomTom touch now is one of the newest activity trackers released on the market. The stand out feature for the TomTom touch is the BMI (Body Mass Index) sensor. The BMI calculations are achieved with a bioimpedance sensor which sends a signal through the sensor and you’re body – yes this actually happens.
With the TomTom touch built as an activity tracker, it does exactly what you would expect from such a device. With a comfortable, simple and reasonably thin design this is perfect for those after tracking their calories and activity.

]]>The post Benefits of 24/7 Tracking appeared first on Highly Tuned Athletes.
]]>So let’s start with explaining what 24/7 tracking is. If you haven’t gathered it tracks you pretty much every second you’re breathing. Now, you might have your reservations at first but let’s apply some practical use cases from experience.
Living a busy work-life it can be hard to achieve fitness goals in your personal time. This effect is compounded in winter, as it really is the months to hibernate. However, having a simple reminder on your wrist with the amount of steps you’ve walked is more than just that. It prompts you to take the longer way, take the stairs and walk the dog.
The other use case is tracking sleep. I’ve used multiple apps on my mobile however I’ve been especially uneasy with using my phone right before bed. I’ve also found it’s too easy for tracking to be inaccurate from a phone, as it can easily knock.
However, 24/7 tracking via a fitness tracker is different. The reason is, the watch is stuck to your wrist. As a result, the tracking information received is incredibly accurate. At times I’ve had incredible sleep with few overall hours (e.g. 5 hours) and other times I’ve felt the opposite with more overall sleep (e.g. 8 hours). The case for the fenix 3 is that deep and poor sleep were tracked within 10 minutes across the night. I remember waking up in the night and it knew exactly when.
So what was causing poor sleep?
One example that contributed was working out too soon before bed.
Now, if you work out you’re most likely aware your brain releases chemicals such as Epinephrine (adrenaline – which wakes you up). I learned this the hard way when after going for a late run I couldn’t sleep until 2 AM and had a poor sleep afterwards – which was an extreme case.
But having this tracking allows you to try other things. Such as not having a coffee after 12 PM or 6 PM.
So If you’re struggling to go for a run, ride, workout at the gym, or having poor sleep, make sure you wear your watch.

]]>The initial asking price for forerunner 35 is $299 which is reasonable considering what is it offering.
See specs sheet below of a comparison of other Garmin products:

If you skipped above, the Forerunner 35 is perfect for running considering it’s price. It fits well between the other watches garmin offer and has the best features from the forerunner 235 and fenix 3. With it’s updated look and feel, we wouldn’t be surprised to see an adoption of this watch for everyday use.
In fact, this is exactly what the Forerunner 35 is. Updated looks and software allow the user to feel happy wearing their device in public and having the practical functionality of 24/7 tracking.
Comparing to the competition the price is high but reasonable. An example is the fitbit blaze, it lacks GPS, water resistance and optical heart rate.
The TomTom Spark on other hand is priced from $219, however the base model doesn’t include optical heart rate. At additional cost you can get optical heart rate however the Spark isn’t exactly the most attractive watch. If you want the Spark it’s main party trick is it’s price, it has GPS and can allow for music playback (at an additional cost)
In summary, if you want good running watch, optical heart rate, 24/7 tracking and want it too look good, the forerunner 35 is the perfect watch.

]]>This is achieved with the GT having two motors, providing an insane top speed of 50 kilometres per hour (even faster, see below).
Bamboo (Street)
Range: Up to 35km
Top Speed: Approx. 36-42kph/22-26mph
Carbon (Street)
Range: Up to 50km
Top Speed: Approx. 36-42kph/22-26mph
The new remote now has extra information to be seen at a glance. It also allows for different speed modes:
For the external design, the carbon fibre + the bamboo have been elevated to another level. Personally, our favourites are the street versions of the ‘GT’. However, Carbon GT for us looks just as good. The carbon fibre materials look as if it’s been taken straight out of a million dollar supercar.
Even if you’re not into skateboarding it’s a beautiful piece of engineering. Sure, it’s not a tesla, but it is in the world of electric skateboards. It has the range, acceleration, top speed and torque. The range is an amazing, up to 50 kilometres (I could get to work and back).
It’s simply the best, other competitors have been getting closer, however, the newest addition of ‘GT’ has Evolve Skateboards miles ahead. If you’re truly looking for a new awesome toy for summer to get around town, miss the snow or want a new thrill from skateboarding, this is it.
For more information please feel free to contact us or come into our store. We are providing test rides for those are interested in the Evolve Skateboards (conditions apply – we reserve the right to decline your request).

]]>The Polar M600 has one feature that is completely different to the competition with respect to its software, that being its utilisation of Android Wear. Now, don’t be fooled, this isn’t just a smartwatch, it’s a fitness device with native functionality for GPS. Meaning, you can take this watch for a run without your phone.
Android Wear, why is it a benefit to the M600?
The answer is apps and a lot of them, over 10,000 and counting. The closest competitor to this is Garmin’s connect IQ store which is excellent, however limited by comparison.
Below is a table of what you can do with the M600, compared to what you can’t do with a Garmin Forerunner 235
Polar M600 | Garmin Forerunner 235 |
Reply to text messages | Limited functionality |
Use google maps (full navigation) | Use TracBack (shows trail of direction) |
Play music | No music |
Voice commands | No voice commands |
Translate (via voice commands) | No translation |
Shazaam (finds song whilst it’s playing) | No functionality |

Having Android Wear software built for the M600 whilst having Polar’s know how adds another dimension to what a fitness watch can be. The best use cases for Android Wear is normally for those who are time poor, but now this has changed.
The M600 native fitness apps are familiar territory to anyone owning a fitness watch. The apps cover multiple sports with built in functionality for weight training, running, cycling and much more.
As mentioned Optical Heart Rate is included, which is perfect for steady state cardio. If you participate in high-intensity training, weight training or CrossFit it’s recommended you purchase the H7 Bluetooth strap.
If you want to discover or be one of the first to try a truly smart fitness watch, this watch is a perfect choice.

]]>So what’s new?
If you’re familiar with the GoPro HERO4 it can be particularly annoying to start recording. Now with just one button you can turn on the camera and start recording. Other issues users can face is utilising the case to protect the camera. Now the HERO5 is water resistant straight out of the box.
Voice control is another additional that is welcomed. There are many situations when using a GoPro is amazing however equally annoying. GoPro users aren’t strangers to completely stopping their activity just to start or stop recording. Take, for example, skiing, snowboarding and riding using the buttons with gloves or having a GoPro mounted a helmet, it is simply frustrating to use.
The touchscreen sees another update, which boasts a size of 2 inches. This is accompanied with a major user interface update, to assist with making the GoPro easier to use. The aim being “anyone should be able to pick up a GoPro and use it”.
For the tech specs, there aren’t any major improvements other than 4k at 30 frames per second and 1080p at 120 frames per second. This is a welcome update though we are yet to see just how good the image quality is. Whether there will be another update to the GoPro range with better specs we are yet to see or hear.
For the photo taking abilities, the HERO5 Black has an improved sensor and major software update. GoPro now adds RAW shooting, which is significantly better than JPEG. This is an impressive software feature as raw shooting capabilities are normally reserved for professional cameras. If you’re into your photos and willing to take the next step, this is one of the first steps to improve your images.
The HERO5 is one of the most anticipated camera launches of 2016. Within our offices, we are very excited to see these changes, as they will help make using the GoPro easier. On top of an easier camera to use, improved specs and the price, the GoPro remains to be the ultimate portable action camera.
